I like the question. 😊 I believe in these turbulent times, what is needed most is both paths. We as a discipline are always embarking on providing both simultaneously. No doubt the healing is needed - many are facing fear, anxiety, lack of confidence, etc. more than ever before. But also the martial application is just as important - in yesterday's class, we discussed how we employ that application without kicking or punching. The use of the will, discipline, conviction, and management of feelings and emotions, etc are just as important as they have ever been. Once I had the privilege of sitting in a conversation with Chief Inst and Mstr. Jawwaad when they were discussing this exact subject. Prior to the conversation, I thought as Mstr Jawwaad in that the philosophy and the martial are two separate entities and should be taught as such. Chief disagreed wholeheartedly. After hearing both sides, Mstr. Jawwaad and I both came to understand that both are vital not only to the students but also to each other. Without the philosophy, the martial falls to nothing more than rote exercised practices that leaves practitioners wanting more. It merely becomes an appetizer or warm up to a daily thoughtless routine. This is displayed in many other martial arts classes. Yet without the martial application, the philosophy becomes no more than fabled tales spoken from the pages of cold book left upon the shelf. I'm short, both entities will soon die after the last who knew of their joint existence stopped displaying them. Tumfo tu transforms, saves, and heals people. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to hear from so many students just how the discipline has done that for them. Without both the healing (philosophy) and martial (physical) applications working hand in hand, tumfo tu dies.
